28/11/2014, Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought

EKIF President Dr Despina Charalambidou-Solomi participated on November 28, 2014 at an event organised by the Office of the European Parliament in Nicosia in honour of Dr Denis Mukwege, 2014 winner of the European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Dr Mukwege has treated for 15 years more than 10,000 victims of rape and genital mutilation in his country, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

21/11/2014, International Conference “Gender, Law and Institutions”

EKIF President was invited to chair a session as well as to present a paper on “Challenging equal opportunities in the academic landscape of Cyprus. The female perspective” at the International Conference “Gender, Law and Institutions”, held at the University of Cyprus between November 21-22, 2014.

20/11/2014, Campaign of the Cyprus Women’s Lobby

EKIF supported the campaign of the Cyprus Women’s Lobby to collect 5000 signatures in order to pressure the President of the Cyprus Republic to sign and ratify the Convention of Istanbul of the Council of Europe on preventing and combating violence against women. EKIF is a founding member of the Cyprus Women’s Lobby.

20/10/2014, Combating violence against women

The President of EKIF and Daphne Phinopoulou, Member of the EKIF Board of Directors, participated in a lunch organised by the Cyprus Women’s Lobby on October 20, 2014 in order to plan a set of actions to highlight the need for combating violence against women. The lunch at the Garden Café in Nicosia was also attended by female MPs Roula Mavronikola, Stella Kyriakidou and Athena Kyriakidou.

15/9/2014, “Embracing victims of trafficking, protection, information, strategies”

The President of EKIF attended a meeting on the invitation of the Socialist Women Movement on Monday, September 15, 2014. At the meeting, representatives of NGOs and women’s organisations were informed of the project “Embracing victims of trafficking, protection, information, strategies”, which is being implemented by the Socialist Women Movement in cooperation with the Organisation for Protecting Victims of Sexual Abuse & Exploitation – STIGMA and Gender Stream Consulting Ltd.

EKIF issued a Press Release following the approval of the bill on the prevention and combating of sexual abuse of children as well as of child pornography by the House of Representatives on June 20, 2014. It received a wide coverage in the press.

EKIF issued a Press Release on “Women’s Representation in EU institutions” on June 26, 2014 to highlight the fact that following the results of the 2014 European Parliamentary Elections, a very small number of women were represented in EU institutions. It received satisfactory press coverage.

21/5/2014, Information portal on funding programmes and the Horizon 2020

EKIF President attended the information portal on funding programmes and the Horizon 2020 at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia on May 21, 2014. The event was organised by the General Directorate of European Programmes, the Office of the European Commission in Nicosia and the government of the Cyprus Republic.

The President of EKIF was invited and attended the discussion on “European Elections 2014: Is it time for quotas?” organised by the Office of the Commissioner of Administration and the Office of the European Parliament in Nicosia, on May 14, 2014.

13/01/2014, The legal framework of prostitution

The Office of the Commissioner for Administration informed EKIF on 13/01/2014 of the position of the Commissioner for Administration regarding the legal framework of prostitution in Cyprus. The Report of the Commissioner included suggestions made by EKIF regarding the revision of the laws relating to prostitution.
